The year without summer

In 1815, a volcano called Tambora erupted on the Indonesian island of Sumbawa. Scientists think that this was the biggest eruption in the last 10,000 years. It threw 30 times as much ash into the atmosphere as Mount St. Helens in 1980. The ash spread around the world, blocking out the sun. This caused cold, damp weather in many places over many months. Crops didn’t grow, causing food shortages that led to riots. In America, 1816 was called “the year without summer.”
